A busy last few days! So lets begin. Saturday I decided I really should keep up vaguely job hunting, I trekked up to North Vancouver and dropped off a couple of Resumes and application forms off at an outdoor store and a Staples. Judging by the reaction of both I don't expect to hear back from either. The weather really picked up on my walk back to downtown, so I decided to cut through Stanley Park. I saw a fat raccoon begging for scraps outside a cafe. He had about 30 tourists photographing him. As I walked round the cliff path I bumped into some baby raccoons and there mum. Mum toddled off down a tunnel and left the bambinos playing on a path. A cyclist then appeared on the scene a scared them, so they ran up to a fence. At this point Mum wonders whats happened and reappears, a random German tourist asked me if it was all right to get close and take a photo, I basically said "whats the worse that can happen", she found out when Mum Raccoon chased her off. There all now stuck up against the fence, and to scared to run across the path and back into the woods. One baby manages to climb up the fence and make it to the other side, and soon the other babies follow, eventually Mum manages to lumber over as well. It was the decided factor in the raging debate: 'Which is better a skunk or raccoon' that JP and Rosie are having. Its Raccoon. End off! That evening me and JP grabbed some food at Templetons. The girls were meant to be joining us, but Rosie now works Saturday nights, and the other two just didn't show (think there both a bit lost without there leader). Afterwards we to the Cambie, Vancouver's busiest rock pub, and met some people JP had been speaking to on Facebook before he left the UK who are also SWAPers. They all seemed pretty sound, and had just got back from going to a ball game that the SWAP organization had... well organized. Most of them had been there slightly longer than I had, and had also been struggling to get work. One guy took 5 weeks to get work, it looks like the average time is 3 weeks, so I'm feeling a bit more upbeat now about being unemployed.
Sunday I did absolutley nothing. I went on the net, I watched 'let the right one in'. Which is the best film I've seen in ages, and probably in my top 10 films ever. Its about a 12 year old swedish boy, who's a bit of a loaner, who befriends a girl who turns out to be a Vampire, and the many problems that they have to get over in there bizzare friendship. Its a coming of age story, with a 15 rating. I highly recommend it. In the evening I watched some crappy film with harison ford in that was trying to be 'Crash' but tried to hard. It was like they had decided to find the worst possible outcome for everyone in the plot.
Yesterday, and back to job hunting, one more very positive lead. I went back to this tiny independent coffee shop in Gastown and chased up my Resume. The lady behind the counter said, as I had returned I must want the job the most, so she would give me priority, which was nice. But I just needed to find Resume, and she pulls out what must have been 50 to 100 resumes out from under her desk. Mine was about 20 down, which means in a week and a half she has had that many people asking for work, and this place is in the arse end of no where, I thought no one else would have hit it. Apparently she had written on my CV that I was 'good' (I think she might be Iranian or from around that way, no one in Vancouver seems to have actually been born there). She said she would definitely give me a call back, and even went to speak to her husband about what work there was. So another positive lead. But it proves that handing out Resumes is pointless. You've got to find places that are hiring and badger them until they take you. I followed up another coffee shop as well, and she said she would check all the Resumes soon, so no chance on that one then, since its in a popular location she probably has 34,564 of them. Also applied for a couple of dishwashing jobs. One gave you an hour window to drop your Resume in, and when I went the manager wasn't there. So he gives an hour window, and then isn't there for it? Grrrrrr!
Today so far I've been to an open interview for a dishwashing job, he caught be off guard a bit with his first question. Which was basically "why are you awesome" I held back the obvious answer "because I have two arms allowing me to wash dishes" and spouted some crap about being outgoing. But he said he would ring me on Thursday and training starts on Saturday. I said "Oh, that's great" but in my head I was thinking "YEA! SURE YOU WILL BUDDY!" So we shall see. Still, its another place to harass until they say no.
There are two contenders for quote of the... last.. three days:-
Girl #1"The only difference between these two packs of biscuits is one pack contained hydrogenated fats."
Girl #2"So you got the non hydrogenated fat one's then."
Girl #1"What? No I got the one's with the hydrogenated fat, they will taste nicer"
I like that logic. Overheard that in the Hostel kitchen.
Library nutter:- "Don't mess with me, I can evacuate a universe!"
Some homeless guy was using the PCs in the library and started having a go at another homeless guy for no apparent reason. I don't even know what it means, so if the universe catches fire or something, he could get every one out? Its certainly not threatening.
