TOP 5 NEW MUSIC TRACKS!
#5 City and Colour - Sometimes.
So I'd been here about one week and wanted something relaxing to listen to, and found this in my collection. Ben (props for the heads up that I Eventually followed) recommended them some time back in 2008. Anyway many a happy evening was spent sat outside the HI Downtown hostel in the sun listeneing to this.
#4 Alexisonfire - Young Cardinals
This track was released in the first couple of weeks I was out here. Another HI Hostel classic.
#3 J Tillman - Firstborn
Are you trying to sleep? Do you want something stupidly relaxing? Then why not listen to J Tillman? His records are available from all good record shops, and probably HMV and amazon. See previous blog entry for the my views on his live show.
#2 Blackmail - Moonpigs.
I bloody love this track. Discovered post second Whistler visit / between snowboarding days. So about a month ago. Discovered it through last.fm. Sadly the broke up mid 2008 so I will never get to see the live. There German, but you can't really tell, apart from the mildly hilarious chorus of German singing moshers half way through.
#1 Dismemberent Plan - Face of the Earth
This band is honestly one of my favourite bands ever. Up there with Minus the Bear and Oceansize. Firstly I love this track because that acoustic-ie riff. Its kind of haunting, and I like the way it kind of repeats its self. The lyrics are also amazing. I interpret it as that point you realise that the feelings you have for some bird are mutual, but the song expands on this theme when who ever wrote the lyrics realises she ment more to him that he first realised when the relationship ends. Basically its Janet Jackson - Got till its gone with quirky drum and guitar. I discovered this track in the golden days. When I was employed. Moved into this place, but hadn't started work yet. So spent my days on the beach, and drinking. Or on Granville drinking.
Top 5 Homeless Guys
This is going to seem a bit harsh. But Vancouver has so many homeless people you become acclimatized to vast quantity of them, and think nothing of homelessness after a while. Pus when there wondering around in the road outside the house shouting at traffic at 3am, it becomes even harder.
#5 Elastic Band Guy
He does a magic trick in which two elastic bands some how get impossibly linked together. You are impressed because your drunk. You give him two dollars. Every other drunken idiot on Granville gives him two dollars. He buys crack. Everyone is a winner.
#4 Wheel Chair Guy
So he's the nicest guy in the world. He's always smiling. He looks up to you, smiling, from his wheel chair and says "put a penny in the hat, and all day you'll have good luck" and you feel bad for the wrest of the day because your so shallow you'll only give money to people when your drunk and they do crappy magic. To buy crack. Then one day you see him walk of the bus one day carrying his wheel chair. Guilt be gone.
#3 Bob Marlet Tribute Guy
He has got a fair few paragraphs devoted to him on this blog already. He was the guy me and Rosie saw one night after leaving the jazz club. He played various Bob Marley tracks on a beat up blue acoustic guitar, and he was bloody amazing. In the time we saw him he made $10, got some free pizza, and a bottle of coke with vodka in it. Hell, he probably has groupies.
#2 Shoe Pollishing Guy
We met him in our first week, and when I say we, I mean Rosie. He's south african and moved to Vancouver in the 80's, but things went wrong and he ended up on the street. Now he polishes people's shoes on top of a little crate. We spoke to him while we were having a ciggarette one time. Bloody nice chap. Rosie got a photo of me and him one time, it was my profile photo for a while.
#1 Spoons!
Spoons! (The exclamation mark is probably on his birth certificate) walks around Granville playing the spoons. He has a long white beard and as you walk past him will play a very quick tune on his spoons before making eye contact as if to say "Yea, you liked that, give me a dollar and I'll play my entire discography." People shout his name as he walks past with genuine enthusiasm that only a Vancouvian can muster. What a guy.
