So the last week has been Solid. Gold. Madness. Tuesday I had my second day at work, in which I was expected to carry out all of my new duties on my own, and I didn't manage to complete all of them by a long way. There seems to be a boundary at which I can't make Crispy Mash any faster. But my sandwich construction technique is getting slowly better. I also had to 'work the line' for the first time. It was intense. All of the recipes I had carefully memorized flew straight out of brain and were useless. Also when you memorize "apply a sprinkling of black and white poppy seeds" its fine as a random statement. But how the hell do you sprinkle them equally, were are the seeds stored? Do they go on the hot wings or just the chili chicken and Tuna? The second day I got slightly faster, but had run out of energy a bit. Also I've been so busy I've not even had time for lunch, I just drink 2 pints of Canada Dry 'in the middle of shifts. But by the end of the week I was starting to get the hang of working the line. Also my work colleagues are really nice, there all pretty funny, and laid back. The only weird thing for me is they follow movements of celebrity girls on the Internet similar to people in the UK who read Hello magazine or something. In the UK we kinda look at celebrity women and go she's attractive, etc. But we don't actually care what there doing. I also love the Canadian accent. Its American, but they put 'Aye' onto the end of random questions or statements. Also they make statements like there questions, with the pitch going up at the end of the sentence like the Australians do. The other weird thing at work is that when someone asks you how your doing you pretty much have to answer 'amazing' or 'awesome' or something. Which I'd say we reserve for roller coasters and fireworks and stuff in the UK, not washing dishes. Still its a really nice restaurant, and I hope I can keep the job going for now, though working there at Christmas might be a little to much for me. So gotta look for another job some time round there I guess.
The evenings this week have been fairly quiet, chatting to JP in the evenings in the hostel. Watching TV, and then heading to bed. But that all changed on Thursday, which was the beginning of my weekend this week. Thursday itself was fairly quiet, I did a shop, I chatted to my Canadia/Nigerian room mate, and went to the beach and watched the sun set. It was awesome as usual. Friday I got up and decided I was going to look for a second hand bike for the commute to work. First I tried some rental shops, but they weren't selling anything second hand. So I thought I would risk.... East Hastings. This is because there are a lot of pawn shops there, and I thought I might be able to pick up a cheapish bike. Its the first time I've been deep into East Hastings, there are people high in the street on meth and heroin, covered in scars, it was pretty fucking horrific. I did find some pawn shops that were selling $1000 bikes for $150 dollars, that looked new. This is because they had been stolen from people who had saved up for them for ages, and then sold for $50 to a pawn shop to buy meth. As I like having a conscience, I decided against that bike purchasing option. So, I'll wait until labour day (September 1st), when for no known reason, two of the rental shops are selling a lot of there bikes. That evening, Me, JP, Rosie, Maddie, and Chloe went to Templetons for some grub, then went for one drink... or that was the plan, me and Maddie and Chloe were in the mood for a longer session, so we bought some Cider and went to the beach, watched the sun set, and got slowly drunk. Standard free shelf check commenced at 4am. I forgot to mention it before, but the Hostel in in the gay district of Vancouver ( I like the Dennys ( American equivalent to little chef) covered in gay flags and with a bubble machine, sure they might actually belong to the club above it, but it doesn't spoil the image) , and this week is Pride weekend, so Davie street was closed on Saturday evening so Drag Queens could mime and stuff. It was pretty good.
Saturday I moved into my new apartment and chatted to my lovely parents, in the opposite order. The place is a bit tatty, I nearly broke my desk when I stood on it to fix my blind, and the room looks so bare. But the people I've met who use the shared facilities are really nice, its 50% Japanese students, and 50% the rest of the world. After four hours of being in his new place JP was bored and rung me, I popped round and watched some baseball with him (who new that sport is so complicated) then went and watched China's entry in the Fireworks competition. I thought it was pretty good, but we were to far away to appreciate it properly, when you can feel the explosions in your guts. Also you can have to much fireworks, amazingly after half hour you start to get a little bored.
Today I got up, and one of my Japanese room mates told me that the Pride parade was today, and it was worth seeing. So I decided to check it out. After failing to meet Rosie and Maddie as it was to busy. I watched it on my own. It was pretty good. Did you know there is a lesbian Dragon boat team? Or a gay sector of the 9/11 truthes conspirasists ( I looked out for Mad Phil, but couldn't see him). Some of the floats were playing cracking stuff from the new wave of disco, though I'm not so sure about George Micheal type cheese stuff. After I found Rosie and Maddie and went for a pint with them. Then went for a quick swim, before heading back here for some chili. I also got cornered by a nice Czech lass who talked at me for 3 hours. I have only just made my escape. Good times! No free shelf here, but some one had left a sliced melon for anyone who fancied a bit on the table in the common room, so looks like my greed problem will be covered after all.
